Like watching bears crochet with silk.

Does it piss me off to see high performance professional equipment being used “wrong” ?

    Yes.

Does it remind me that despite my fancy workflow, cafés still make really good coffee even though they’re spending a fraction of the time and money that I do at home?

    Also yes

I have no idea what I’m doing but I’ve literally never had a shot pull nearly that badly, not even once

Okay, so it’s not just my local shop then.

It just… Baffles me how so many shops, seemingly around the world, want to run a big fancy espresso machine… But don’t want to train their staff. Or sometimes their staff does somewhat know how to use it, but what’s what? We gotta adjust the grind size every now and then? Oh yeah, the maintainer who comes to maintain the machine and grinder will do that when he comes next year again…

Meanwhile here I honestly wish I could start my own coffee bar, but then I look at what that’ll cost. Gotta love the balance.

    💀

you can’t convince me this isn’t satire

The bar for service and food feels incredibly low lately. It’s a big reason why I’ve leaned into making my own coffee and cooking more at home. It wasn’t until I traveled to Japan and Korea that it really clicked, there’s just a level of care and attention that is completely missing here. Obviously I’m generalizing, and there are still places doing it right, but it feels more like the exception than the norm now.

  10. Not surprising in the slightest. I cringe when buying coffee out from time to time at places that *should* be doing it right.

Loves coffee, hires ex shoe salesman as ‘barista’

  12. I have a bean subscription that sends me different stuff every few weeks and Anodyne is one of the roasters. The last beans I had were great… And I certainly didn’t have this problem xD

  13. If you love coffee and you’re served *whatever the hell that is coming out of that espresso machine* I think you have a moral obligation to kill the barista.

  14. I’m local and saw this live on my 6pm news. I also dropped my jaw and said WTF out loud. Anodyne used to be good, but they were bought by private equity and this shows.

Shameless unpaid promotion from me: I know some people who work at Anodyne and really care about coffee. It’s not as experimental/4th wave as Stone Creek Coffee, but it’s a solid choice for some good single origins

like… no tamping? what causes that? did they add rice to the basket? wtf is going on here

Slightly off topic but that softball question of “do you like coffee?” Was answered like a robot trying to figure out what the ‘correct’ answer is

Unsurprising that someone who named their business Anodyne without checking up on what that word means also hasn’t bothered to learn how to pull a shot.

Anodyne (adj.): bland, dull, uninteresting, insipid, or inoffensive.

  19. I just made a bedtime espresso (don’t ask, ADD), and I know my wife would kill me if my pull did that on our counter.

Oh I think we all know this feeling. Dude probably pulls immaculate shots 364 days a year and then a live television camera is pointing at your face and suddenly you can barely avoid falling on the ground.

  22. Prayer_Warrior21

This is exactly why I hate even ordering espresso at places, it tends to be trash.

If anyone is in Minnesota, Edina Coffee Roasters is awesome, it’s run by coffee nerds, each of their roasts have in/out/timing targets so you can duplicate what they do in their cafe. I go to buy beans and usually end up getting a shot or two to enjoy lol

  23. I was there that day (playing a board game in the background with the khaki hat on)… I saw this video clip on reddit and assumed it was from the Milwaukee thread… clicked on it to also comment on how bad the shoot was pulled, then realized it was in the espresso section. While it wouldn’t justify what we see here, she is a nice barista, and to be fair the camera person was up her ass while she was trying to work (like literally standing a foot away the entire time). Anywho, thanks for posting this, as I’ve not seen it before.
